Dr Richard Kirk MA MB BChir (Cantab) MRCS DRCOG FRCP FRCPCH

I trained at Christ's College, Cambridge University and Guy's Hospital graduating in 1979. I became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1983 and was subsequently elected Fellow in 1994 and Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatricians and Child Health in 2001. I have been reistered with the GMC since 1979, on the European Specialist Register for both Paediatric Cardiology and Paediatrics since its inception in 1996.

My general paediatric training was principally undertaken in Bristol Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

My specialist training in Paediatric Cardiology was undertaken at Harefield Hospital and Freeman Hospital in the UK, Boston Children's Hospital and the  University of California, San Francisco in the USA and the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne in Australia.

Following my training I was appointed consultant to the University Hospital of Wales and established the Paediatric and Fetal Cardiac Service for South Wales which achieved UK recognition as a centre of excellence.  In 2001 I moved to Singapore and was Head of the Department of Paediatric Cardiology at the National University Hospital. In 2004 I returned to the UK and to work in the Department of Paediatric Cardiothoracic Services at the Freeman Hospital. I have over 25 years experience at consultant level in the non-invasive and invasive management of all aspects of congenital cardiac disease.

My special interests are transplantation, heart failure, developing educational material for trainees and lay people and utilising IT to improve patient care.   I was the lead clinician for the heart failure and transplant program at Freeman Hospital between 2005 and 2015. During that time it achieved an international reputation in the challenging aspects of transplantation and mechanical support. More recently I have been appointed Professor Pediatrics at the University of Texas Southwestern, Dallas and Director of the Heart Transplant, Heart Failure and Ventricular Assist and Mechanical Support Programmes at Children's Health, Dallas. My specialist experience in this area has enabled me to develop strong links with other centers around the world, sharing experience and providing professional support.

I have published many papers on various aspects of congenital heart disease and presented work at national and international scientific meetings.
